In Sumatra, Indonesia, ECOM sources Robusta and Arabica coffee as well as cocoa from smallholder farmers. Different levels of service delivery have been implemented with the objective of increasing the quality, quantity and consistency of supply, while at the same time enhancing farmer productivity and profitability.

Our Service Delivery Model (SDM) analysis found that income diversification, renovation and rejuvenation practices as well as access to finance for farmers each play critical roles in the success of the SDM. The study also demonstrates that the SDM has the potential to be financially sustainable without sacrificing ECOM’s profit margins. It further explores how to successfully leverage the appointment of Crop Doctors: entrepreneurial farmers who generate an income from supporting ECOM in their service implementation.
